A 20-year study at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine revealed a startling connection between low testosterone levels and death rates when scientists looked at the relationship between testosterone levels and all-cause mortality.
During their study of 794 men over 50 years of age, 538 of the men died. The common link among the 538 deaths was low testosterone. Regardless of age, lipid levels, and other variables, men with low testosterone were 40% more likely to die than those with higher levels. (1)Laughlin GA, Barrett-Connor E, Bergstrom J. Low serum testosterone and mortality in older men. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2008 Jan;93(1):68-75.
Study: Men with Low T Had 88% Increased Mortality
Another study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine researched whether low testosterone levels were associated with an increased health risk for male veterans. After adjusting for other known mortality factors, they found that men with low testosterone had an 88% increased mortality. (2)
Higher T Levels = Longer Life
A third long-term study on men being treated with testosterone found that those who were NOT treated with the hormone had a 12.4 times greater risk of death — in other words, they were 1240% more likely to die earlier! And 26 nonfatal heart attacks and 30 nonfatal strokes occurred among subjects who did not receive testosterone, compared to NO nonfatal heart attacks and strokes in the testosterone-treated group.
